While Charlcia Sleeps

Ten years ago, on June 29, 1996, I married my wonderful wife, Charlcia. (Charl-See-Ah) It’s southern, don’t ya know? She was born in Marietta, Georgia and she is definitely, what you would call, a peach. Soft skinned, very sweet but easily bruised. A rock solid core that you don’t want to bite down on too hard, if you know what I mean.

It’s 5:52am, the morning of our Anniversary and we’ve been driving for about 11 hours. We’re on a marathon trek down the Pacific Coast Highway; that’s Highway 1 for those of you on the East Coast. It’s a beautiful and spectacular drive along the rocky cliffs and sandy beaches of the California coast: A photographer’s paradise. (period)

OK…so, wait a minute…hold on, let me change the story just a little. I said WE’VE been driving for 11 hours. Correction: I’VE been driving for 11 hours; she has been sleeping like a baby through the night, in the seat next to me.

For weeks she has been saving and planning for this trip and it’s finally happening. She’s my prep and I’m her cook. Of course, I could have said, “She’s my Navigator and I’m her Captain.” But, I’m also the Navigator too, especially at 5:52 in the morning. She gets to play the cozy Georgia peach, wrapped snuggly in her little blanket, delicately packed for the trip to the market. (More on shopping, later.)

Meanwhile, it’s been a looooonng drive. We left Lake Tahoe at 7:30pm last night. I will have been up, for nearly 30 hours, before getting my first hours of sleep, sometime later that afternoon. I, of course, am very excited. It’s 5:52am and the sun is about to rise on the first day of our 10th year together. Now, that’s something to be excited about.

These pictures were taken during a trip to Rome in Jun 2008, where I presented a 2-day seminar on "Web 2.0".

I noticed this couple, sitting on the railing that separates the vehicular roadway from the pedestrian part of the Piazza del Popolo. I couldn’t tell if they were arguing, engaged in a who-blinks-first? contest, or just having a thoughtful conversation…

I can’t help wondering if this couple had any idea how many people would look at their picture (a little over 14,000 as of January 2012), and how many different bizarre blog postings — well over a hundred, at this point, from all over the world — would use the image of their conversation to illustrate their message. Bringing up babies

Chennai is growing fast. It is the target for a lot of IT and ITeS companies. Tall, huge buildings, be they, office blocks or apartments, are mushrooming all over. It is all steel, concrete and glass everywhere.

Crows and pigeons are surviving; sparrows, mynas and parrots are becoming rare. Another favourite of Chennai is struggling hard to find its way around the concrete jungle – the Indian Palm Squirrel or Funambulus palmarum. More on this here.

Blue cross retrieves many young babies from air conditioning ducts and such. They want volunteers to take care of them for a few months before releasing them in some park.

Uma and kids have brought home three and the whole household has become very busy. Feeding every four hours, cleaning up and playing with them all the time. These baby squirrels get royal treatment. Elias had dangerous levels of bilirubin resulting in jaundice of the skin. So we had to stay 24 hours in the Pediatrics Department of Rapid City Regional Hospital. They kept these UV lights on him non-stop (except to feed). The UV lights help break down the bilirubin in his blood. It was a very tough night of sleep. On top of feeding through the night, the anxiety, lack of space, and bright lights made it a restless night.
