Bringing up babies

Chennai is growing fast. It is the target for a lot of IT and ITeS companies. Tall, huge buildings, be they, office blocks or apartments, are mushrooming all over. It is all steel, concrete and glass everywhere.

Crows and pigeons are surviving; sparrows, mynas and parrots are becoming rare. Another favourite of Chennai is struggling hard to find its way around the concrete jungle – the Indian Palm Squirrel or Funambulus palmarum. More on this here.

Blue cross retrieves many young babies from air conditioning ducts and such. They want volunteers to take care of them for a few months before releasing them in some park.

Uma and kids have brought home three and the whole household has become very busy. Feeding every four hours, cleaning up and playing with them all the time. These baby squirrels get royal treatment. They get cold and the fans go off. They want to sleep everyone should become silent. The works. People get strict instructions from Nila when she goes off to school.

Now waiting for Arun to say that we should bring home some baby pythons too.

Elias had dangerous levels of bilirubin resulting in jaundice of the skin. So we had to stay 24 hours in the Pediatrics Department of Rapid City Regional Hospital. They kept these UV lights on him non-stop (except to feed). The UV lights help break down the bilirubin in his blood. It was a very tough night of sleep. On top of feeding through the night, the anxiety, lack of space, and bright lights made it a restless night.

Rough Life For A Rehabbing Litter Of Baby Squirrels

There are actually five babies together but I could only get 3 of them without disturbing them.
We got these cuties because we had a bad storm and the nest broke and came down. The people put them in a basket under the tree next to the broken one and left them there for about 6 hours. They did all the right things but the mother didn’t come back for them.

For many years when children did not sleep with their parents, this was a house were the babies spent most of their time.Mothers came to feed, baby food was cooked and during the night there was always someone awake on duty.
The house was connected through intercom with other children’s housesa nd when crying was heard the "nightwatch" had to go there.

Week 2 – Baby It’s Cold Outside

A storm passed through last night as we slept, and we woke up to a deep blanket of fluffy white snow outside.

At least it’s still nice and toasty indoors.

Children and babies. My first experience photographing them was very tiring. If I didn’t have two awesome assistants helping me that night, I’m sure I would’ve died of exhaustion. I had a lot of fun and it was definitely a learning experience. I think I sweat more pressing that shutter button than I did working out at the gym the other day.
